School: University College London
Course: Chemical Engineering (MEng)
Year: Final
Grade: 2:1

“I think I developed my charisma as the eldest of five children – I am a twin and my younger siblings are triplets – and it’s a skill that I like to think that I’ve brought over to my academia,” says Joseph.

And he is absolutely right, as evidenced by the great success he has found in various roles during his time at university thus far.

Joseph made history in his second year when he became the first non-Economics student at UCL to be named president of the Economics and Finance Society in 60 years – it is also the largest society at the university with up to 20,000 people on its mailing list.

Part of his role was to lead a committee of 30 students to organise and put on career events on campus, including inviting senior speakers to these events, pitching for sponsorship.

While in the role, he made sure that history-making was a bar he kept aiming for, firstly by pioneering a new and highly competitive mentoring programme to professionally support a cohort of 52 students. He did this by pairing up senior students with first-years, the result of which saw the first batch of 52 mentees gain a record number of 54 spring week offers at top firms including McKinsey & Company, BlackRock, J P Morgan, Lazard and Goldman Sachs.

Joseph also managed to raise £65,000 in sponsorship, making the society the most funded at UCL.

In his third year of study, he became head of sponsorship for the Engineering Society, which he also co-founded, and he was awarded with UCL’s Societies Colours for two years of exemplary service.

Joseph was elected to be part of the Amos Bursary’s 2016 cohort. The Amos Bursary is a charity which exists to ensure talented men of African Caribbean descent have the opportunity to excel in education and beyond.

Since becoming part of the organisation, Joseph has taken the initiative to become part of its student leadership team.

In this role, he is the lead for the psychometric testing education for other students, which has since seen a marked increase in AB students reporting back regarding application testing success, and he is also the applications-lead for black male members.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I’d like to be successful in my field. When somebody is setting up a start-up, I’d like to be one of the top ten people that they’d call.
